Don't believe what you read - These devices EAT batteries. They only accept AAA penlights when they should be powered with D cells. I modified mine to take power from 3 external D cells and it lasts much longer. My possibly work with 1 18650 lithium but the 3.7V from that cell may not be enough to power the device but I'm gonna try. If it works I'll put 4 18650's in parallel in a holder. Should last even longer than the D cells but at reduced voltage. Maybe not as bright.
