$40 is about the "price floor" of a mechanical hard drive, regardless of capacity. Motor, bearings, head mechanism, all have a basically-fixed cost. If a mechanical drive is sold for less, someone's taking a loss.
It's interesting to see the 1TB mark hit this floor, right as 512GB SD cards are readily available and 1TB cards are right around the corner. I wonder if that relationship has held relatively constant over time.
I'm not a fan of WD Blue drives. I like the Black, Gold and enterprise versions. Also drpud, I also liked the Raptors until I found out how quickly they failed.
