Even for an amateur photographer I'd be hard pressed to spend this much on lens when a mid tier phone with an adequate lens can do 70% of the photos. I get it though, compared to the brands this is a decent price. With kids..no way I'm lugging this around with a camera, bag and accessories.
^ A mid tier phone is a joke compared to a camera befitting a $529 lens, with the point being that it ZOOMs (and MUST have a larger lens to gather enough light at that zoomed in scene), otherwise just the camera without this lens will run circles (just fewer of them, lol) around the phone.
Granted, if you're only downsampling something for facebook, sure the phone will do fine in good lighting conditions.
PS, my travel camera with built in zoom, is smaller than an average phone in height (though 2.5X as thick) and also takes better pictures than any normal midrange phone and (probably) even high end phones.
Phone cameras are great to have available, but you can do much better without having to go to extremes of camera gear, and if taking a lot of pictures, not be wearing down your phone battery the whole time since you probably want to have some charge left to do other things with it.
Still, most people no longer need to invest in $1000 worth of camera gear but they never did. This is more for light duty pro or prosumer buyers who take a lot of pictures where quality matters.
