Today, Apple announced new Macs with the long-anticipated Apple Silicon M1 SoC (System on Chip), marking the end of the 15-year Intel era. The M1 is similar to the ARM-based A14 Bionic chip found in the new iPad Air and iPhone 12.

macOS also got one of its biggest updates in years. Known as "Big Sur," macOS 11.0 will launch on Thursday, 11/12, and will bring speed improvements, app redesigns, iOS app crossover and privacy features.

The first 3 Macs that will use the new M1 chip are a fanless 13" MacBook Air (from $999), 13" MacBook Pro (from $1299) and, yes, a new Mac Mini (from $699). The M1 chip has an 8-core CPU and 8-core GPU (7-core GPU on the entry-level MBA).

All 3 new Mac releases are available for purchase today (shipping next week).

They did this pre-Intel era. Would be interesting to see the benchmarks and future versions to compete with the chip giant.

Any of the new M1 Macs are not upgradeable after purchase (parts are soldiered to the mb. make sure to check the specs you will need to future proof yourself.
