^ Many people don't feel comfortable making their own soil mix. This is compressed coconut coir and fertilizer, so would be good for holding a lot of water if you don't want to water as often, for example going on short-ish vacatioins, but the structure of the coir allow aeration so the extra water doesn't drown the roots and promote fungus as easily.
Also significant is that Miracle Grow has formulated the amount of fertilizer needed in this situation, while people adding their own to coir, have to make the right choices for slow release or else a fertilizer salt would dissolve too much and kill the plant. You can use certain types of finished compost instead but it tends to compact more so it puts more of a limit on how much water it'll hold before becoming a fungus problem.
SO, you don't really need this product if you're experienced at rolling your own soil, but it has its uses if you don't want to do that. The cheaper method would be just have a covered (so not a mosquito haven) dish under the pot that bottom-waters it so it has a reservoir, or do both for an even longer extension between waterings.

It's also good for starting seeds.
Thank you!
