Update: Preorders start today and most carriers have some sort of promotion going on. Here are the main ones to know about:

Forced applause...In non-bargain news today, Apple just announced three new models of the iPhone: the 5.8" iPhone Xs ($999), 6.5" iPhone Xs Max ($1099) and a "budget" model, the 6.1" iPhone Xr ($749). You can pre-order the Xs models on Friday (9/14), and the Xr will be available for preorder on 10/19.

The Xs models have a "Super Retina" edge-to-edge display, improved A12 Bionic chip, and some pretty cool upgrades to the camera: Smart HDR, and what got me, the ability to adjust depth of field after taking a photo. Basically, the CPU upgrade is adding cool new features to the camera, but the actual tech of the camera hasn't really changed much from last years' models.

The Xs Max has the biggest iPhone display ever, but will be about the same physical size as the 8 Plus.

Both the Xs and Xs Max are available with up to 512GB storage (double the biggest size for last years' iPhones).

The aluminum Xr comes in 6 different colors and has a "liquid retina" LCD display. Single camera, though it will be getting portrait mode.

Other announcements include the Series 4 Apple Watch now with a built-in electrical heart sensor that can give you an ECG(!).

^That "event" was hard to sit through! It just hasn't been the same since Jobs! I still love my iPhone (especially the camera) and will continue to get iPhones, but yeah, not nearly as much excitement anymore :(

If you already have an X or 8/8+, wait for next year. But if you are looking for something new, go for it. If you are looking to save a few dollars, consider the Xr, same cpu as the flagship. You just need to ask yourself if all the other bells and whistle is worth the extra $200.

Good overview/information, but still scratching my head as to why this "deal" is rated "sizzling."

though very muted, the XR is very considerable. Its 25% more battery life going 1.5 full days normal use, and 10-20% cheaper, and larger screen. its what all apple fanboys wanted. Honestly most people just want more battery life and thats exactly what they are giving, by a good amount. My old iphone 6 is going to older relatives with fresh batteries for $30, I never have to support their phone, easy to update and facetime is a breeze for grandma. yes the events are pretty boring now, and so are the phones, but dam they are so rock solid.

The ECG will be useful for the sticker shock when you see the cost of the Xs

Is there a reason to get any one of the new phones from Apple vs. from the carrier (ATT, Verizon, etc.)?

What a sham. Adding software features that they're holding back from prior models even sold the previous year. The adjusting aperture and other features should be made available on the 8 plus models and the 10 at least.

Maybe Apple wants to make sure it is not another "bend gate" or "map gate". They always get strive to get the best "out of the box" experience. Don't forget, Apple is still the one to beat. I really don't see Android companies advertise against each other. They only go against the "best".

Any good deals for people that aren't giddy, 12 year old girls? Any Samsung or LG deals?

Apple iPhones aren't what they used to be... I just bought a new 8+ 256gb and had it unlocked, love the camera, but it's just now catching up with the camera that I had on my Samsung Note 4 years ago... I do like that you don't have to constantly reboot an Apple like you do an Android...

If you go through Apple you get AppleCare tacked on, which is way better than carrier insurance. Plus, you can switch carriers if you need to.

The carrier deals are all really quite bad, aren't they? Only Sprint comes even close to covering the cost of the phone, and that's for a weird lease deal. Might be time to start looking at budget carriers like Ting and Consumer Cellular.

Still love Apple. Just wish they would make a smaller phone. I guess I’m in the minority there though.
