I think the curvature of the Earth might have something to say about those "80 miles"

Actually, due to the height of television broadcast antennas, curvature of the earth isn’t ever a factor. It’s simply a function of the strength of the broadcast, and the ability of the antenna to receive distant signals.

In theory, VHF-UHF signals can travel quite a long distance, but so many factors come into play. If you google it, you'll see utube videos on DX TV viewing, but for the most part I'd say it's 20-40 miles at best.

Ok so take the range of the TV antennas on top of the Sears Tower at about 1500 ft tall. Their maximum reach is 60 miles. The strength of the broadcast is also related to what they are allowed by FCC. Hopefully the antennas where you are are taller and the broadcast signal more powerful.
